Review Honor 70 5G

I have had the opportunity to test a new smartphone of the brand Honor which was announced during the month of May of the year 2022, I mean the Honor 70.

This smartphone landed in Chile at the end of September 2022 and today it will become the protagonist of this review so that we can learn about many of its features.

The Honor 70 stands out for having a screen of the type 6.67-inch OLED with Full HD + resolutionhas a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and when playing multimedia content, the device can play content in HDR10 +.

Inside we have the processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ octa-core, accompanied by 8GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. It operates with Android 12 along with the Magic UI 6.1 customization layer, it has 5G connectivity and a 4,800 mAh battery with fast charge.

We have a lot to tell you about this Honor 70, so you are totally invited to continue reading our review of this complete smartphone that is already available in our country.

Design and display

We start with the design of this Honor 70 which has a screen with curved edges, a feature that some like, and others do not. However, I must say that my experience was good because I found it more comfortable to hold the equipment and I did not have false touches around the edges.

I must warn you that the equipment is a bit slippery when you take it out of its box and start using it. However, this problem is solved thanks to the transparent silicone cover that comes inside its box, which considerably improves the final user experience.

The good thing is that it is a light device, since it weighs 178 grams, while its dimensions reach 161.4 x 73.3 x 7.9 mm. At the moment, I do not know if this equipment has any type of protection against splashes and/or dust.

As for the color of the equipment, I must say that I got the color that Honor calls “Crystal Platinum” which is beautiful, especially when you see it in broad daylight. This side of the equipment not only attracts attention because of its color, it also does so because of the camera module it has, which protrude from the body a little, which in turn makes the equipment unstable on flat surfaces, but if you use it with the silicone cover, there it is stable.

Let’s go to examine its sides starting from the left side where we have nothing, but on the right side we have the power keys and the volume keys.

On the upper side we have two holes for two microphones, while on the lower side we have its main speaker, the USB Type-C connector, its main microphone and the slot for two Nano SIM cards, and I am sorry for some to comment that there is no slot for MicroSD cards.

Our protagonist has a beautiful 6.67-inch OLED-type screen with Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, 20:9 aspect ratio, and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Its screen is also compatible with HDR10 + content and image quality. it’s really great, it’s like watching an OLED TV with really vivid colors, deep blacks and a really high brightness level, although I don’t know how many nits it can get.

As I mentioned before, the screen has curved edges that personally don’t bother me, but I do know people who hate this type of screen, so that’s up to each individual. The screen has a perforation in the upper central part where its front camera is housed.

We have a 120Hz refresh rate and the truth is that on this screen it shows, you can appreciate the fluidity when you slide through its interface, and it has three options: “Dynamic”, “High”, and “Standard”.

As for its settings, we can configure the temperature of the screen, activate the dark mode, modify the text and display size, activate the “Smart Resolution” function, choose which apps are displayed in full screen, add a notch, activate the name of the operator and display the speed of the network.

The Honor 70 has three rear cameras in total, the main one being a 54-megapixel Sony IMX800 sensor with f/1.8 PDAF aperture, while its second sensor is a 50-megapixel ultra-wide angle with f/2.2 aperture and 122˚ aperture. vision. It is followed by a 2-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture each.

On the other hand, we have its front camera that reaches a resolution of 32 megapixels with f / 2.4 aperture and supports front video recording in Full HD at 30 frames per second.

This is what the application that controls the camera looks like, it is quite complete in terms of capture modes, it works quickly and you have a couple of functions to activate, such as the horizontal level that will help your photos come out correctly level.

As you will see, dear reader, we have some cameras with good characteristics and obviously we have tested them to see how their photographic performance is.

In my experience, the image quality during the day is very good, nowadays practically all smartphone cameras already take good photos when we have good light conditions. I tried the macro camera and the truth is that you can’t ask for much quality from a sensor of just 2 megapixels.

Night photos the situation is different, as I found the image quality to be very good, both in normal mode and in “night mode”, I really liked the quality.

I am going to leave you with some test photographs so that you can appreciate the image quality in different light conditions.

Now we have reached the video section where our protagonist has the ability to record in 4K quality with up to 30 frames per second.

I leave you with a test video recorded in maximum quality so that you can appreciate part of its quality:

System and Multimedia

The Honor 70 comes from the factory with the Android 12 operating system and customized with the Magic UI layer in its version 6.1, and it is expected that it can also receive the latest versions of the Google operating system when they are available.

Everything operates thanks to its octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ processor and manufactured in a 6-nanometer process. The unit that touched me brought 8 GB of RAM, while its internal storage was 256 GB. The graphic power of the device is due to its Adreno 642L GPU.

The performance offered by this hardware is quite good and fast, as fast as if it were a premium high-end computer, everything runs 100% smoothly, I did not run into any lag during the time I was testing it, it opens applications quickly , Google Play takes very little time to install and update the apps, which is greatly appreciated. We also have to thank its customization layer that is very well optimized.

I am going to leave you with a demo video so you can see the equipment in action and see how fluid it runs, as well as learn about some of its functions, the sound quality of its speaker, a small unboxing and more.

Our protagonist has an optical fingerprint reader under the screen as a security method, it works very well, and it is fast to recognize the fingerprint.

And if you can’t use a fingerprint for X reason, you can activate facial recognition that uses the device’s front camera to identify you and unlock the device, although it only works well when light conditions are good.

As for the Android security patch, the device is up to date with the patch for the month of July of this year, so the device is somewhat outdated, although we hope that soon Honor will be able to release the August or September patch.

The equipment is compatible with the 5G NSA networks present in our country of the operators Entel, Movistar, WOM and the Claro Chile test network, as well as with network services such as VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calls of each of them. .

It is also compatible with 4G +, in addition to being Dual SIM with Dual 5G. Unfortunately it does not have eSIM technology. In addition, it has Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 2.4 and 5 GHz connectivity, as well as Wi-Fi 6, has NFC connectivity for mobile payments with Google Wallet, GPS and a USB Type-C 2.0 port compatible with USB On-The -Go.

Our protagonist has a 4,800 mAh capacity battery with which I had a very good autonomy, in addition to being compatible with 66W fast charging with the charger that comes in the box, with which you can charge “in theory” 60% in only 20 minutes.

With the personal use that I gave it, having the brightness on automatic, 5G connectivity activated, Wi-Fi connection from time to time and with all the settings applied at the factory level, the Honor 70 gave me an autonomy of almost 7 hours of screen .

Unfortunately the equipment does not have any type of wireless charging.

On this occasion we find a single main speaker, so the sound we will receive will be in MONO. This speaker is located in the lower part of the equipment.

Although the sound quality is good, and in fact it sounds quite loud, it does clip a bit at maximum volume though. In the same way, stereo speakers are missing in a team like this. As I have mentioned in other reviews, I think that the addition of stereo speakers should already be a standard.

To improve the sound quality, we have the audio effects called Honor Histen that only work when we have headphones connected, either wireless or wired.

Here we will find 3D, Natural and standard Audio, as well as an Automatic mode. If we choose the standard mode, we will access a customizable 10-band equalizer, as well as being able to increase the bass sounds.

Unfortunately we do not have an FM Radio tuner, nor do we have a 3.5mm jack for wired headphones, although you can instead use a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter that you must buy separately or use the hands-free headphones that it comes with. USB Type-C connector.

Despite the fact that I am an iPhone user and the Apple world in general, I used this Honor 70 as if it were my own personal device for more than two weeks, since I felt very comfortable with what it offered me.

Its OLED screen looked excellent, very good image quality and everything looked fluid thanks to its 120 Hz refresh rate, which is greatly appreciated. The operating system was flying, it was very fast and it worked very stable, apart from the fact that I like the customization layer that Honor applies, which is the same one that we saw in Huawei equipment, a layer that I also liked.

I don’t really like the issue that it has only one speaker. As I mentioned in the review, I think that by now it should be a standard to offer stereo speakers in all ranges of smartphones, since we consume too much multimedia content on our computers and many times we are not using headphones. Similarly, the speaker that this equipment brings sounds good.

In the photographic section I must say that I loved it, the daytime photos come out with a very good image quality. In fact, the photo where my dog appears in the grass, now I use it as a wallpaper on my computer because it turned out great. The night photos also came out with a very good quality and almost no noise, so it gets a very good grade in this section.

And well, to finish, I totally recommend this smartphone for all kinds of people, whether they are young people who want a device for social networks, others to play games, others for multimedia, and others who only want to have a smartphone that acts as all. This Honor 70 will be excellent for you, you will have 5G connectivity, you will be able to pay with your mobile via NFC and everything will be smooth and stable. 100% recommended.

The Honor 70 was available in a presale that lasted until October 5 for $629,990 and came with an Honor Watch GS3 and Honor Earbuds True Wireless Stereo wireless headphones.

I don’t know what will happen after the presale ends. I imagine that only the equipment will be sold without gifts, but I don’t know if its price will stay the same, go down or go up. In any case, I will leave you the link so that you can see it in the Honor online store.
