An eagerly awaited trailer for the Super Mario Bros.
It was during a (very) short Nintendo Direct that the Kyoto firm finally presented the first trailer for the film dedicated to its mascot, Mario. A long-awaited project since it is produced in collaboration with Illumination Entertainment, a film production company known for Me, ugly and mean and especially Minions. So, before watching the trailer, we were treated to an intervention by Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario’s “dad”, who took the opportunity to remind that the license has existed for forty years and that he was thanking everyone who ever played it in their life.
After that, we were treated to a speech from Christopher Meledandri, CEO and founder of Illumination Entertainment, who said that it is a privilege to work on such a project which should be completed next week. Currently, the teams are finishing the lighting and composition of certain scenes of the film. During this broadcast, we also learned that Koji Kondo, the iconic composer of Mario, was working on the feature film. Finally, Chris-san, as Shigeru Miyamoto calls him, said the film had been in the works for seven years.. Just before seeing the trailer, we were treated to interventions from Chris Pratt and Jack Black, two particularly well-known Hollywood actors, who play Mario and Bowser respectively, and who share the honor that this represents to play such iconic characters.
Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser, what does it look like?
As far as the trailer is concerned, it is divided into two parts. First, we discover a land of ice that is invaded by a kind of floating land surface covered in lava that sports the face of Bowser. Quickly, koopas come down with Namek, one of the generals, at their head. Finally, it is Bowser himself, doubled by Jack Black, who arrives and faces the ice castle.. It is then that we discover that it is inhabited by some kind of penguins which tend to push back with the help of snowballs… without much effect. Eventually, Bowser destroys the castle gate and gets his hands on a star that appears to empower him.
At the end of this sequence, we finally discover Mario coming out of a pipe and who seems lost as he lands in a world covered in mushrooms. Without too many surprises, this is the Mushroom Kingdom and we finally discover the voice of the famous mustachioed Italian plumber who is played by Chris Pratt. It was then that he met a Toad, played by Keegan-Michael Key (Jordan Peele’s sidekick (get-out, Us, Boop)) who gives him a small fright, before guiding him towards the castle in the distance. The trailer then ends with a shot of Mario and Toad heading towards the building, with the Super Mario Bros. game theme. that resounds, but in a more epic Hollywood version. A little later, we see Luigi, played by Charlie Day, who is pursued by an army of Skellerex and who takes refuge in a castle that seems abandoned.
So that’s what the first trailer for the Super Mario Bros. movie ends on, while Miyamoto reminds us that the movie will be for everyone, of course, and that it will be broadcast on March 29 at the cinema. In the meantime, new excerpts will be released regularly.
