business news Xbox: the takeover of Activision-Blizzard passes an important milestone, the details
You know it: Microsoft wants to buy Activision-Blizzard, but it’s not because the two parties agree that the acquisition will be done in the blink of an eye. Given the scope of the project, the various official and governmental bodies must first give their agreement… and one of them has just done so.
Brazil, it’s validated
Announced last January, the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard by Microsoft has had the effect of an earthquake, not only in the world of video games, but the entire tech industry. An absorption negotiated for an astronomical amount and which should be completed in 2023 only, if all goes well.
Because yes, the path presents some pitfalls, notably sown by Sony, which points to the danger of monopoly and unfair competition. By acquiring Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft appropriates, for example, the Call of Duty saga, one of the main hens with the golden eggs of PlayStation and inevitably, the pill does not pass.
This is why the various government authorities, responsible for validating or not a takeover to avoid a monopoly situation, must first give the green light to Microsoft for the agreement to take place with Activision-Blizzard. Not long ago, the first country to give its endorsement was Saudi Arabia. Today, Brazil is following suit and this is an important step, since the South American country has a very large community of players, especially Xbox.
One more step towards redemption
In Brazil, the regulatory body that deals with the case is called CADE: Sony had just sent him a file last August to point out the harm that such a takeover could cause. A file studied meticulously, but which will therefore not have borne fruit since the validation by the CADE has just been made public at this address. The following statement can also be observed:
It is important to emphasize that the central objective of CADE’s activities is the protection of competition for Brazilian consumers, and not the defense of the particular interests of specific competitors.
Some will see it as a little acid nod to Sony (rightly?), but for the moment, everything seems to be going as planned for Microsoft, which hopes to convince the other states to validate its ambitious project.
