don't be fooled by the official charger's 30W

Google is promoting a 30 W charger for its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. However, by reading the small print at the bottom of the official site, we learn that the two smartphones support powers of 20 and 23 W.

That’s it ! The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have been officially presented. These smartphones promise great things, especially on the photo side – in particular thanks to the Photo Unblur function or the zoom capabilities. However, there is one point that may annoy users: fast charging.

On the Google Store, it is written that the Pixel 7 can find ” up to 50% charge in about 30 minutes“provided you use”Google 30W USB-C Charger with USB-PD 3.0 (PPS) sold separately“. In other words, some might believe that smartphones are compatible with 30W charging.

30 W for the charger, not for the Pixel 7

However, this is not the case. A small annotation refers to the bottom of the official page to explain that “wired charging speeds quoted (up to 20W on Pixel 7 and up to 23W on Pixel 7 Pro) assume use of the Google 30W USB-C charger, plugged into a wall outlet“.And to specify that “the real charging times may be longer“.

Thus, the actual charging power supported by the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro is lower than that put forward by Google with its official charger. Google’s fine details also clearly hint that you won’t achieve the same charging speeds with other chargers.

This is not surprising. Regardless of the USB-C port which is becoming more popular – and which should even concern the iPhone – manufacturers continue to use proprietary charging technologies. Thus, to ensure that you benefit from the best charging speed, it is recommended to use the official charger supplied or sold by the brand.

At Google, the 30 W solution costs 29 euros.
