Game News Cyberpunk 2077: to have a sequel that rocks, the license is moving! The secrets of the developers
CD Projekt knows where to go. A few days ago, the studio unveiled its roadmap for the many years to come, with no less than 5 The Witcher games (a trilogy and two spin-off episodes), a new license for the moment called Hadar, as well as derivative productions, new studios or even the departure of Marcin Iwinski.
The release of Cyberpunk 2077 went very badly for CD Projekt, which admitted its faults about the old-gen versions, and which spent more than a year and a half patching its title while developing an extension, called Phantom Liberty. The latter will arrive next year, but will mark the end of the road for the game taking place in Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long way, and will go even further with Orion!
Back in the good graces of the players thanks to the work doneto many promotionsand quality advertising through cyberpunk edge runnersproduction to 20 million copies sold begins its home stretch. But this is only the beginning of a new era for CD Projekt. The company is reorganized many months, bought two studios in North America and opened a third, and Marcin Iwinski, co-founder and co-CEO of the company, announced his resignation.
Anyway, in addition to the games announced around The Witcher license and the new license in development, CD Projekt has announced the Orion project, which is none other than the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. The project is ambitious, and CD Projekt announced it indicating that it was determined to prove that the license is powerful and that its potential is enormous. If it is not expected for several years, the new game should mobilize lots of peoplebut not necessarily where you think!
Hundreds of developers for Orion, and a new continent
In an interview with VGC, Pawel Saskothe director of quests, clarified something important: it is CD Projekt North America (Boston and Vancouver) who will be responsible for to manage the development of Orion. For the occasion, the developer will pack his bags and to relocate across the Atlantic Ocean:
I see you are asking me the question so I would like to clarify things. After the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC, my main focus will be on the new Cyberpunk 2077 project, codenamed Orion. I am moving to Boston with the team responsible for Cyberpunk 2077 to create a new studio and be the base of the North American team. In collaboration with the Vancouver team and the Warsaw team, we will deliver a game that rocks.
Both studios will receive the support of the Warsaw studio, and will mobilize several hundred people. This is also a huge change for CD Projekt in general, since until then all major projects have been developed Poland. Asked about the manpower required for the production of the game by IGN, Piotr Nielubowicz, Chief Financial Officer of CD Projekt, said:
The North American studio will consist of teams from Boston and Vancouver, with support from developers in Poland. As for the question of the total headcount required for such a production, I think the best point of comparison is Cyberpunk 2077, our most recent release, when considering the headcount requirements for development and future projects of this magnitude. Without taking too many risks, I think we can say that we should need 350 to 550 developers.
If the sequel is on the same scale as Cyberpunk 2077, we can even imagine that the range given to us is the low fork. Indeed, some sources have, at the release of Cyberpunk 2077, indicated that the teams were a little limited to move forward at a good pace and manage the unexpected. It remains to be seen whether the move of the license will have an impact on the tone and mood of Orion, even if, we remind you, Night City is located in a fictitious way on American territory. In any case, CD Projekt does not want to reproduce the same errors, in particular at the level of quality assurance !
