When alumni from Riot Games and Activision Blizzard form a new studio, it’s to offer the video game world a PVE-oriented MOBA with a big dose of competition. The Vela Games team invited JV to an online presentation of Evercore Heroes (formerly Project-V), a project initiated in 2019 designed to satisfy a wide type of gamer. The ideas and the talents are there, what about the magic?

Become a hero, just for one… season

When you start a new business, you have the chance to ask yourself how to make games for the next 10, 20 or 30 years”. It is with these words that Travis George, co-founder and CEO of Vela Games introduced the vision that his newly formed team has for Evercore Heroes, a project designed to “combine the intransigence of eSports with the energy of positive social dynamics”. Admittedly, the formulation is well found, but in fact, what does this studio formed of former Riot Games, Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts really want to offer players?

Evercore Heroes borrows the team play and skill system of a MOBA and integrates it into an MMO PVE where teams of players challenge each other. Four squads of four players compete on four identical maps and must accomplish various objectives until they meet and beat a final boss. All teams see the presence of participants on the minimap, while opposing heroes are represented by glows. Evercore Heroes is therefore a PVE-oriented race against time against several enemy squads. At any time, it is possible to check where the other players are in accomplishing a mission via an element of the interface.

Our goal has always been to make the game players really want, even if that means thinking outside the box. With EVERCORE Heroes, we’re building a unique multiplayer experience, bringing together cooperative and competitive skill-based gameplay in a whole new way. After more than two years of great feedback from early testing, we’re thrilled to finally be able to share the game with the world. Travis George, CEO and co-founder of Vela Games

The science-fantasy world of Lumera that users will be roaming around looks varied, based on the few artworks we’ve seen., with snow-capped mountains (the territory of Kru), lush jungles (Moxy) or even futuristic cities. A system of seasons is already planned to deliver new environments as well as new heroes after the official launch. The base roster we were shown included attackers (Shade, Zari, Cynder, Blink), a tank (Fyn), and healers (Beko, Lotus, Remy). As you can imagine, as in any good self-respecting MOBA, each hero has their own skills (four in number) and strengths. Some are more mobile, others can do long-range attacks, while still others have powers designed for crowd control. Regarding the customization of these protagonists, talent trees are included in order to allow builds adapted to the style of the player and the challenges of the missions. Shards offering combat bonuses can be purchased in exchange for a few gold coins (virtual currency that can be collected in the game).

A race against time… and clocks

Keyboard and mouse in hand, the game looks like a classic MOBA whose games last between 20 and 30 minutes. Different monsters are to be destroyed which allows you to earn XP points, gold and items. The most important thing in Evercore Heroes is not to clean the map of its creatures, but to accomplish objectives, which has the effect of charging the Evercore in Luum (a magical energy) until causing the encounter against the final boss. Once the guardian has been summoned, a fight consisting of different phases begins. This is when the teams will have to use their talents to come out better than the others.

At various points in the progression, the boss can send waves of creatures to destroy the Evercore, a structure that is essential to protect. These waves are described as more or less powerful depending on the actions of the other opposing teams. During the extract shown, lucky little ones had managed to capture a point on the map, causing an “elite” Yeti to appear in the worlds of other squads. You will definitely understand, although Vela Games’ software is 100% PVE, it pushes the competition between players to a high level. According to the development studio, the project has been reviewed and corrected several times since 2019 so that it becomes “excellent”, rather than simply good. If you fancy checking out what Vela Games has to offer for yourself, you can try out a pre-alpha available October 13-16 by signing up at Evercoreheroes.com.
