Starfield: a former Bethesda developer talks about the scale of the project | XboxOne

Bethesda’s next game, Starfield, is definitely one of the most anticipated games of the next few years. The latter has been relatively discreet since the Summer Game Fest 2022. We discovered at the end of August that Starfield would be 2x bigger than Bethesda’s biggest game and today is a new interview which confirms the scale of the project. .

Creating Bethesda’s Largest Universe Required Their Largest Development Team

Nate Purkeypile, a former Bethesda developer who left the studio to set up on his own, opened up to our colleagues at PCGamesN and spoke extensively about the Starfield project, which still raises a lot of questions among the public. Purkeypile spent 14 years at Bethesda as an artist on projects ranging from Fallout 3 to Starfield.

Without spreading too much on the latter because of many clauses protecting it from leaks, we learn in particular that Starfield is the biggest game ever made by Bethesda and the one that required the biggest team.

“The scale of this project is the main difference, because Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4 were all made by one team. Fallout 76 was mostly two teams, we had a little help from Montreal, but it was mostly Austin and Maryland studios working together.

But yeah, Starfield is a much bigger project, there are about 500 people on the team, whereas I think Fallout 76 had maybe 200, at most.”

The sheer size of the Starfield team is one of the reasons Purkeypile founded his own independent studio. The ex-developer also talks about the difficulties encountered by the Bethesda teams in terms of the details of the game. Bethesda has offered a titanic job in Starfield to achieve a fictional world that is more immersive and lively than ever.

“There aren’t always solved problems of what things should look like. It can be so many particular things, like the shape of the metal panels? How do you screw things together? What colors do you use? on? What materials are used? How do I tell the difference between all these different areas? That’s a lot harder than if you asked me to do another follow-up game.

You have to figure it all out, and there’s all this extrapolated fiction to figure out too. You’d be shocked at how many metal panels they did in the concept.”

The same goes for the size of Starfield which will include 1,000 explorable planets and over 100 solar systems. Despite the fact that Nate Purkeypile had to remain rather evasive, Bethesda would have indeed succeeded in proposing a very vast universe without betraying the singularity of each planet.

“I can’t really get into the technical details, the Fallout 76 map is about twice the size of Skyrim, and it’s been a lot of work for people, but yeah, it’s not ladder. Even if you wanted to outsource, you would have to hire a country. Realistically, it’s a fraction of this team that actually works on the planets. ยป

Finally, Purkeypile was asked questions related to The Elder Scrolls 6 and Purkeypile simply claimed that Starfield was supposed to set the public’s expectations for the next The Elder Scrolls game.

“So they have to be like, ‘look, we’re going to set expectations.’

Sure, there’s Elder Scrolls Online, but frankly, I consider that to be a bit like a separate market for the MMO group. I think letting people know that it’s going to be a while before that happens is part of that.”

It is hoped that the work put in by the vast team at Bethesda will have paid off after years and years of development. Remember that the game is now scheduled for the first half of 2023 and will be released on Xbox Series X | S and PC as well as directly in the Xbox Game Pass.
